And then there’s Samuel Vimes, the one-time fall-down drunk who is now a Duke, a man synonymous with honor and respect, and a husband – oh, and the father of a young boy. The city has diversified, becoming a hodgepodge of ethnic groups and races, from dwarfs to trolls to gnomes to werewolves and vampires, and the Watch has followed suit (with some reluctance, admittedly). The Watch has become not only genuine enforcers of law and order, but something respected and esteemed in the city – an organization known to stand for something bigger than itself and one that helps everyone, no matter how big or small. By the time Thud! opens, readers who skipped from Guards! Guards! to this seventh entry in the annals of the City Watch wouldn’t even recognize Ankh-Morpork, much less the characters themselves.
